Founded in 1978, Mechi Surshar Carpet started off with a small store in
Thamel, Kathmandu during the heights of the flower revolution.
Since then, this family owned business has produced thousands of square
meters of expertly handknotted rugs. Mechi's rugs can be traced to a wide
variety of clients all over the world.
The company's founder Namgyal and his American importer and long time
friend Steve met in Kathmandu in the 70's. Even in the early days, they
were quickly able to recognize the fine quality and craftsmanship of
Tibetan rugs which had been introduced by Tibetan exiles in the 60's.
Steve with inspiration of the
Arts and craft movement was able to revolutionize the traditional Tibetan
rugs by incorporating modern designs into the rugs which were mostly
traditional Tibetan motifs. Today, we see their passion reflect on the
looms with the production of exceptional rug designs coupled with expert
craftsmanship.
